If you're involved in building tracks or are lobbying land managers for mountain bike access then you'll probably find some of these downloads and links useful.

 

Mountain Bike New Zealand (MTBNZ)

  • A brief summary of the arguments for shared-use tracks: Mtb Access Fact Sheet
  • MTBNZ's suggestions for the Partial Review of the Kahurangi National Park Management Plan. Includes a comprehensive summary of mountain bike access issues and research. MTBNZ KNPMP 2007
  • Mountain Bikers Code: Respect Others; Respect the Rules; Respect the Track.  Track etiquette guidelines in different levels of detail for use on web sites, ride guides and trail head signs. Click here to view basic, full and detail versions
  • Track Gradings – used in New Zealand's definitive guide book, Classic NZ Mountain Bike Rides, and by the Department of Conservation around the country.

 

Department of Conservation DOC

  • The General Policy National Parks prevents use of mountain bikes in National Parks but does provide for Management Plans to allow access for on selected tracks. General Policy National Parks
  • Guidelines for DOC land outside of National Parks recognises mountain biking as a legitimate backcountry recreation that should be encouraged. DOC Mtb Guidelines

 

International Mountain Bicycling Association (IMBA)

It would be difficult to improve on IMBA's model for rallying the troops to better the lot for off-road riding. Check out www.imba.com for a wealth of information. They publish two excellent books on trail building. If your club or organisation is involved in trail work, then talk to Ground Effect about getting your hands on a copy.
